PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Modern Mold & Tool has relocated within Pittsfield to a substantially larger building in the Downing Industrial Park, giving the growing manufacturer the space its expanding operations demand.

The company, founded in Pittsfield in 1950, acquired the 66,669-square-foot facility in June 2021 for $2.5 million and began moving operations in early October. The building, which includes rail access, replaces roughly 50,000 square feet across two buildings on East Street — nearly half of which had been leased out.

Room to grow

"If we had a big job with large parts, we'd have to store them in the parking lot," said Jack Warren, president of Toner Plastics, which purchased Modern Mold & Tool in 2016. "We just did not have enough space."

The company's injection-molding operations, employing 56 workers, have already moved into the new facility. The tooling division will follow, bringing all of Modern Mold & Tool's Pittsfield workforce under one roof.

Continued investment

The move comes with significant investment in the operation itself.

"I'm not sure how many more we'll add, but we've already spent $1 million on new equipment" at the new building, Warren said, noting the company intends to add more employees in Pittsfield.

Modern Mold & Tool also operates a plant in Ormond Beach, Fla.
